The Chambers Hotel has officially completed its transition away from Sonder and is once again operating as an independent boutique hotel in Midtown Manhattan.
For travelers, ending this corporate chapter means a return to the exact design details and unconstrained hospitality that established the property on West 56th Street in the first place. Operating as a standalone boutique property allows our team to run the hotel with total focus on our guests, realigning the experience with the neighborhood's creative history.
Design-Driven Spaces
The shift back to independence brings the hotel's physical spaces back into focus. Inside the double-height lobby, the atmosphere relies on an edited material palette of natural walnut, warm plaster, polished concrete, and copper details that reflect a signature beige-to-orange warmth.
It’s a space designed with texture everywhere, but never noise, anchored by a central fireplace and large-scale artwork. Above the arrival area, a mezzanine level features red lounge chairs and dark wood millwork, offering a private vantage point to watch the lobby below.
Throughout the 77 guest rooms and suites, David Rockwell’s architecture intentionally works against the predictable constraints of a standard hotel floor plan. Spread across twelve distinct configurations, no two spaces are identical.
Accommodations feature hardwood floors, hand-selected art, and authentic French casement doors that open directly to the city outside. Layouts range from functional studios to apartment-like One-Bedroom suites with deep soaking tubs, up to the two-story Duplex Suite featuring a sculptural steel-and-timber staircase and an expansive private terrace overlooking the Manhattan skyline.
While the hotel’s design offers a sense of escape, modern technology is seamlessly integrated throughout the guest experience. Guests can enjoy high-speed Wi-Fi and streamlined communication tools that ensure a smooth stay while preserving the hotel’s relaxed, artistic sanctuary feel.
Dining at Felice 56 and Exploring Midtown
On the ground floor, The Chambers Hotel connects directly to Felice 56, a neighborhood favorite that brings authentic Tuscan flavors to Midtown. The menu features housemade pasta, exceptional espresso, and pastries worth waking up for, alongside a wine program rooted in northern Italian producers.
Just outside the doors, the hotel sits right where Midtown’s cultural scene meets the energy of Fifth Avenue. It is half a block off the main luxury retail corridor, a short walk from Central Park, and minutes from the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Carnegie Hall, and the Theater District.
